Therapy for ADHD and Neurodivergence

What is ADHD

ADHD is a difference in executive function, the brain's system for focus, planning, getting started, following through, managing impulses, and steadying emotions. It is not a matter of willpower or effort, which is why "just try harder" never worked. It is also not only about attention. Many people have lived with it their entire lives without recognizing it, especially those who became skilled at masking their struggles or developed ways to compensate.

It is more than focus

One of the most overlooked parts of ADHD is its emotional impact. Rejection sensitivity, where a small criticism lands like a heavy blow. The exhaustion of masking, of working twice as hard to look on top of things. These are part of the picture too, and they are often what wears people down the most.

If you are realizing this as an adult

Many people, especially women, are recognized late. If you are piecing it together now, there is often grief sitting right next to the relief, grief for the younger you who tried so hard without knowing why it was harder. Both belong here.

What therapy can and cannot do

Therapy does not diagnose ADHD, does not prescribe medication, and does not rewire your brain. If you want testing or want to explore medication, I can point you to the right person, and many people pair that with therapy.

What therapy can do is real. We build strategies and systems that fit how your mind actually works, for focus, follow through, and overwhelm, rather than generic advice built for a different brain. And we tend to the shame underneath, the years of being misunderstood, using parts work and self compassion, so the practical tools have somewhere kind to land. Skills can start helping fairly quickly.
