Therapy for Childhood Trauma

NEGLECT

What It Is

When people hear the word trauma, they often think of one life changing event.

Sometimes trauma does involve a single event. Other times, it develops through repeated experiences over time, growing up in an unpredictable environment, feeling emotionally alone, living with constant criticism, or not receiving the comfort, support, or safety every child needs.

Childhood trauma isn't only about what happened. It's also about how those experiences shaped the way you learned to see yourself, other people, and the world around you.

WHY IT FEELS "NOT THAT BAD"

Why Many People Doubt Their Own Trauma

When nothing dramatic happened on any given day, it is easy to minimize. If you find yourself thinking "it was not that bad" or "others had it worse," that doubt is one of the most common signs, not evidence that nothing happened. If your experiences continue to affect your relationships, your emotions, or the way you see yourself today, they're worth exploring.

SIGNS IN ADULTHOOD

How It Tends To Show Up In Adulthood

Because these early experiences shaped how you learned to survive, they often appear as patterns rather than clear memories. Difficulty knowing what you feel or need. Over functioning and trouble resting. A sense that love has to be earned. Trouble trusting that people will stay.

THE REAL WORK AHEAD

What The Work Actually Involves

Two approaches often play an important role in this work, and each serves a different purpose.

Parts Work helps us understand these survival patterns as different parts of you. For example, the part that stays busy so it never has to slow down and feel. Together, we'll get to know what that part is protecting you from and what it needs.

EMDR Therapy is a structured approach that can be helpful when specific memories or beliefs, such as "I'm too much," continue to feel emotionally charged. During EMDR, you'll briefly focus on a memory while following bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. This helps your brain process the memory as something that happened in the past rather than something that still feels present. EMDR is more structured than traditional talk therapy, and we only begin this work when you feel ready.

THE PROCESS, EXPLAINED

What To Expect From The Process

This is usually not short-term work. Many people meet weekly and notice the earliest shifts, like sleeping better or reacting less intensely, within the first couple of months, with deeper change coming over time. Progress is not erasing the past. It is carrying it differently, so it stops running your present.
